University of Miami Feature: Exploring Historic Preservation on Biscayne Bay

En route to Stiltsville (Courtesy of Dr. David McMillan).

In this University of Miami News feature, I shared insights from a recent hands-on engineering learning module I designed that took us out of the classroom and onto Biscayne Bay.

In partnership with Shake-a-Leg Miami, we brought engineering students out to study Stiltsville, the historic structures built on pilings in the middle of the bay. As I discussed in the article, making Stiltsville our classroom allowed us to directly study the intersection of structural engineering, historic preservation, and climate vulnerability. This kind of experiential learning is vital for transforming fragmented knowledge across disciplines into actionable strategies to protect our cultural landscapes.
